A free alternative for adding a watermark to your photos

There is an irony in adding a watermark with a free online tool: you do it to protect or sign your photo, and many services hand the image back with their own watermark on top, at a cropped resolution, or after uploading your photo to their server. For something meant to protect your content, that is quite a contradiction.

This guide reviews, with concrete facts and as of today, how the best-known watermark services limit things, and presents an alternative that is free, unlimited, without anyone else's mark and uploads nothing: watermark your photos inside your own browser.

What they charge, brand or limit

They do not all limit the same way, but almost all have some friction. As of this guide:

• They put THEIR watermark on the free plan. Watermarkly and Visual Watermark (same company) process on your device —good— but stamp their own mark on the free result (a "Watermarkly" logo or a "Trial Version" text); removing it is paid.
• They lower the resolution or require an account. Photoroom limits free downloads to low resolution (around 1024 px) and works in the cloud with an account. Canva lets you add watermarks, but you need an account and your design lives in its cloud.
• They upload your photo to their server. iLoveIMG adds the watermark on its server (you upload the image, it processes it, then deletes it). It is convenient, but your photo —sometimes unpublished client material— goes through a third party.
• You edit one at a time or wait. Some free web editors process one image at a time or add waits to push you toward the paid plan.

To be fair: privacy-respecting options do exist, and not all of them add their own mark. What almost none combine at once is what you actually want: free, without their mark, no limit on photos or size, no account and nothing uploaded.

The alternative: watermark in the browser, free and without uploading

The text supports any language

A detail that makes the difference: because the mark is drawn onto the photo with your system fonts, the text supports any script —Latin, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew…—. A contrast shadow is also added so it reads equally well over light and dark areas of the photo.

A watermark is a deterrent, not a lock

It is worth being honest about what a watermark protects. It is a visual deterrent, not a technical lock: it makes it harder for someone to reuse your photo unnoticed, but it does not prevent downloading it. If you want real protection, a mark tiled diagonally, at a sufficient size and opacity, crossing the important areas of the image, is the most effective. To sign discreetly, a small mark in a corner is enough.

Step by step

1. Open Watermark images and drag your images (or click to pick them). They open in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
2. Choose the type of mark: text or logo/image.
3. Adjust color, opacity, size, tilt and position (tile, center or corner); you will see it in the live preview.
4. Press Apply watermark: all photos are processed at once.
