How to convert and compress images

Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to any server?
No. The conversion, compression and resizing happen entirely in your browser using the Canvas API; your images never leave your device and the tool keeps working offline once loaded.
Which formats can I convert?
You can load JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF and BMP (and AVIF if your browser can open it) and export to JPEG, PNG or WEBP. WEBP usually gives the smallest size with good quality; JPEG is the most compatible for photos; PNG preserves transparency and is ideal for graphics, screenshots and images with text.
How does the quality control work?
For JPEG and WEBP you can lower the quality (from 1 to 100) to reduce the file size: the lower it is, the smaller the size and the slightly softer the image. A value of 75 to 85 is usually a good balance. PNG does not use this control because it is a lossless format; to make it lighter, it is best to resize it or switch it to WEBP.
Does resizing distort or enlarge the image?
No. You set a maximum width or height (or both) and the image is scaled while keeping its aspect ratio so it fits within those limits. It is never enlarged beyond its original size, so it does not lose sharpness. If you leave both fields empty, the original dimensions are kept.
Why does my transparent PNG come out with a white background?
The JPEG format does not support transparency. If you convert to JPEG, transparent areas are filled with white. To keep the transparency, export to PNG or WEBP.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like: they are converted with the same settings and you can download them one by one or all together in a ZIP file with a single click.
Is EXIF metadata preserved?
No, and that is usually an advantage: rewriting the image strips the EXIF metadata, including sensitive information such as the date, the camera model or the GPS location. You get a lighter image that is more private to share.
What about animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted to a still image. This tool does not create animations; for that you would need a dedicated editor.
