How to sign a PDF online without uploading it to the internet

Someone asks you to "sign this PDF and send it back". That used to mean print, sign with a pen, scan and re-send. Not anymore: you can sign the PDF on screen in under a minute. And the important part: you can do it without uploading the document to the internet.

This guide explains how to sign a PDF in the browser, what kind of signature it is (honestly, because "signature" means several things) and why privacy matters especially here.

What "signing" a PDF means

It helps to separate two things people often confuse:

• Visible electronic signature: the image of your signature —drawn or scanned— placed on the document. This is what most people need day to day for approvals, authorisations, simple contracts or acknowledgements. It is valid and widely accepted in practice.
• Cryptographic digital signature (PAdES, certificates): a mathematical seal that guarantees the signer's identity and that the document has not been altered. It requires a certificate issued by an authority and is usually handled with specific software or official services.
